The Babri Masjid/Ram Janmabhoomi issue has become active again, and is threatening to damage the very fabric of our society. The VHP has set a deadline for the construction of their temple, while the matter is still in court. The demolishing of the masjid structure in 1992 and the following riots and bloodshed, in our opinion (and obviously not the VHP's) represent a sad day in the history of our nation. This round of madness has resulted in several hundred deaths in Gujarat. The goal of this webpage is not to critique or assign blame for the recent spate of violence.

We feel that there is a significant secular section of Indian society which was pained by events of 1992 and now in 2002. Unfortunately, it is the VHP which appears to be doing all the talking. The VHP also claims to be the representative body for all the Hindus across the world. Appallingly enough, that organization claims that the sentiment of majority of the people supercedes the rule of the law. The purpose of this webpage is to prove that there is sufficient opposition to the temple building plans. What we are asking you to do is to download the suggested template from the download page. Please modify the document if you like and print it and post it (snail mail it) or fax it to your member of parliament. If you are not an Indian citizen or resident, we suggest you send a copy to the Primeminister's office. Contact information or suitable links for contact information are provided later in this page. Please send a copy of your letter to the VHP office in Delhi also. The webcounter on the download page tries to measure the response to our efforts.

This excerpt from an article included below quoting former Supreme Court judge, V.R. Krishna Iyer eloquently states our stand as it is today. (From The Hindu, March 2)

"One billion Indians must, at this moment of agony, command in one voice, without reservations, that communalism, whose disastrous consequences are beyond control, shall be jettisoned from our soil, expurgated from India's secular geography because pathological godism is a national killer syndrome," he said.
Mr. Iyer requested every segment of society, every constitutional instrumentality to awake, arise and stop not till every symbol, manifestation and manipulation of seeming religion and bigoted theology, in its violence and vulgarity was extinguished. The people, through the Supreme Court, should make a formal declaration, on the initiative of the Union Government, that the issue of reconstruction of the Babri masjid and the building of a Ram temple be bindingly abandoned with the courts imprimatur, he added.

To summarize, the points we are trying to make (and others that we're trying not to make) are the following.

  1. On the issue of whether the Babri Masjid (or other similar disputed sites) was built on a demolished temple and all the history behind it, we have no opinion on that subject at this point in time. There appears to be a distinct lack of clear information that seems unbiased and trustworthy. These facts would need to be established by objective scientific studies. We would encourage any such study, particularly by professional organizations and unbiased historical societies.

  2. Regardless of what gets established by such studies, we believe that nothing needs to be done to "reverse" the situation. We are against demolishing these mosques and rebuilding temples.
  3. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad represents a radical minority of Hindus in India and the world.
  4. India is constitutionally a secular nation governed by the rule of the law. Every issue in our nation and disputes should be settled and governed by the rule of the law.

What we would like you to do
If you agree with our position, we request you to download the letter of the signature campaign (a new window will pop up)and send it to (by Fax or Snail Mail). If you do not have a printer, please write a neat copy and send that. There are two formats of the letter available, one for Hindus and another for non Hindus. The letter for Hindus contains an extra assertion that the VHP does not represent you. If you are not a Hindu, please download the version without that item. We would appreciate whatever publicity you can give this letter to your friends and family. Please send your letter to the primeminister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee.

Why we choose to do this campaign in this manner
We understand that it is a little difficult to actually print out copies and sign and mail it to people. Those of us behind this website are students who are deeply bothered by what is happening now. We do not have the resources to do something more organized, such as collecting letters and sending them in collectively. The constraints of time in this case are also affecting our decision. It is urgent to get our voice heard. It would probably be easier to email a copy of the letter to an internet mail box. On the other hand, we feel emails tend to lack authenticity. A signed letter is a much more powerful instrument of protest. Eventually, we would hope to get a spectacular response that we will try to publicize in the media as best as we can. If you are reading this and do not believe in our position, that is sad, but you have the right to believe whatever you want to. At some point we hope that you will see our point and agree with it.

An internet campaign has the constraint that those without access are unable to get this letter. Whatever efforts that you put into this issue, informing people and sending them copies of this letter to sign and mail (if they do not have net access), will also be greatly appreciated.

So please, spend a few minutes on this and get your opinion heard. It is your country too.

Please follow this page to download the letter of signature campaign. A new window will pop up. Also feel free to sign our guest book. We would like to know your opinion on this issue.
